LFS Offers New Discount Gift Memberships

If you have friends or relatives who might enjoy being part of the Libertarian Futurist Society, you now have an easy way to include them. Current LFS members may purchase trial-year Basic or Full memberships at a discount as gifts for friends, family members, or any libertarian science fiction fan. Especially during the upcoming holiday season, consider buying several gift LFS memberships as a way of showing you care—about your friends and about freedom.

This special offer, in honor of the LFS's 20th anniversary, will be available until Jan. 1, 2002.

Your gift LFS membership purchases are one of the best ways to introduce others to our organization and its activities. This special opportunity will help continue to build our membership base—which makes it possible for us to sustain our Prometheus Awards, our Web site (www.lfs.org), our newsletter, and other activities.

This special offer does come with a few rules that we ask LFS members to respect: First, gift memberships can only be purchased by current LFS members for a trial-year membership for others. (So please pay your 2001-2002 renewal dues, to take advantage of this offer.) Second, gift memberships cannot be used for membership renewals, either by current LFS members or gift recipients, and cannot be given to lapsed or former LFS members (who are welcome to rejoin on their own).

LFS Board Officers Elected

By Michael Grossberg

The Libertarian Futurist Society board of directors has elected officers for the 2001-2002 fiscal year, as required by our nonprofit organization's bylaws. Victoria Varga continues as Director, with Amy Rule as assistant director. Michael Grossberg continues as board president, with Chris Hibbert as vice president, Varga as treasurer and Rule as secretary.

Also continuing on the board are Tod Casasent, Lynn Maners, Fred Moulton, Bruce Sommer, and William H. Stoddard.

Under the new rotation system adopted by our bylaws when the LFS became a nonprofit organization, all board members will have three-year renewable terms, with three board members re-elected annually. Grossberg, Moulton, and Sommer's terms expire in the fall of 2002; Hibbert, Maners, and Rule's, in 2003; and Casasent, Stoddard, and Varga's, in 2004.

We acknowledge the thoughtful participation of Steve Burgauer, who has rotated off the board. Anyone interested in being considered for future board openings should contact Grossberg (mikegrossb@aol.com). A good first step in becoming more active: Join an LFS committee!

LFS Members Volunteer for 2001-2002 Committees

By Michael Grossberg

For the first time, thanks partly to LFScon, the Libertarian Futurist Society has broadened its base of volunteers and leaders sufficiently so that each LFS committee can be headed by a different member. Such division of labor helps our all-volunteer organization avoid burn-out, while increasing the level of participation by our growing membership.

All LFS members are encouraged to volunteer for LFS committees. Without your involvement, the Libertarian Futurist Society will not be as active or effective in advancing toward a free future. If you'd like to find out more about the activities of any committee, please contact the committee chair. All committees are open to new members except for the Best Novel finalist judging commit-tee, which has a waiting list and a requirement for additional judging dues ($25/year).

We don't want to overlook anyone who is interested in taking a more active part during the LFS's new fiscal year, which began Oct. 1. So if you want to join a committee for 2001-2002, please contact Victoria Varga (varga@compuserve.com).
