The Libertarian Party held its national convention in Indianapolis over the July 4 weekend. Total attendance was about 800.
The Libertarian Futurist Society, represented by several sponsoring members, significantly raised its visibility at the convention, operating a booth, distributing flyers, and talking with other attendees, five of whom joined the LFS during the convention. About a dozen people took flyers back to their home states for distribution at future libertarian events and science fiction conventions.
The newly created flyers carried the slogan "Freedom isn’t a fiction. But pro-freedom fiction can help make freedom a reality." In addition, they included a quoted except from keynote speaker David Brin’s "Confessions of a Cheerful Libertarian," first published in the Summer 2000 issue of Prometheus. Flyers were distributed to all delegates before Brin’s July 5 speech.
Having a booth boosted the LFS’s visible convention presence and made it possible for more than a hundred people to engage in one-on-one conversations with LFS members about the organization’s awards and activities. At the booth, more than 100 back issues of Prometheus were distributed (given free with the flyer to people who seemed interested in joining). The booth also sold books and t-shirts with pro-freedom themes.
Our outreach effort wouldn’t have been as successful without a strong LFS presence in Indianapolis. Among those LFS members who helped man the LFS booth, distribute flyers and/or talk up the LFS: Sponsoring members Melinda Pillsbury-Foster, Michael Grossberg, Matt Gaylor, Charlie Morrison, and Carol Moore.
