Volume 9, Number 1, Spring, 1991

News Flash

Most of the novels that have won the Prometheus Award, and Hall of Fame Award, up to 1989, are mentioned in The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction by David Pringle (Pharos Books, 1990, $24.95). Both the award and the Libertarian Futurist Society are mentioned in the review of The Probability Broach. Pringle's definition of science fiction pretty much excludes fantasy (so The Jehovah Contract didn't make it in). A major SF omission is Alongside Night. Politically, Pringle is left-wing. His ratings are not easily predicted, however - they are all over the map, ranging from one star to four stars. (Heinlein's books receive ratings from zero stars, The Number of the Beast, up to four stars, Have Space Suit—Will Travel.) Examples of LES honored books receiving one star: Trader to the Stars, The Rainbow Cadenza, Anthem, Wheels Within Wheels; Receiving two stars: The Cybernetic Samurai, Voyage from Yesteryear, The Probability Broach; Receiving three stars: The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Moon of Ice, Fahrenheit 451, The Great Explosion, The Syndic, Stranger in a Strange Land; Receiving four stars (there were only two Hall of Fame winners here): 1984 and The Stars My Destination.
